Unveiled at the peak of jet-age optimism, the 1959 Cadillac Cyclone was one-off General Motors concept designed to showcase radical technology and aerodynamic styling that never reached the showroom. Today it survives untouched as a prized piece of the GM Heritage Collection.
Origins and Show-Car Purpose
Built in 1959, the Cyclone served Cadillac’s traveling Motorama circuit, demonstrating the brand’s vision for driver-assistance technology, sleek crash-formed bodywork and turbine-influenced aesthetics. Unlike contemporaneous Eldorados and Series 62s, it was hand-crafted by the Styling Section in Warren, Michigan, using then-experimental fiberglass panels.
Design Features
A wrap-around canopy cockpit, sliding bubble-top roof, and radar-inspired twin nose cones gave the Cyclone a fighter-jet profile distinct from any production Cadillac. Jet-fighter terminology extended to controls: the message ‘weather alert’ illuminated on the dash when its forward-mounted radar sensed obstacles, presaging adaptive-cruise concepts decades later.
Legacy
Never slated for production and with no direct predecessor or successor, the Cyclone nevertheless informed Cadillac’s fin-era styling language for the early 1960s. It remains on static display within GM’s own Heritage Collection, making rare appearances at concours events where it illustrates mid-century American concept-car ambition.
