From 2004 to 2012, the Lancia Musa showed the Italian MPV formula distilled into a compact, five-door package. Positioned as Lancia’s luxury take on the Fiat Idea, it wrapped a distinctly crafted interior inside a 3.99-metre footprint.
Origins & Identity
Fiat built the Musa at its Mirafiori plant and tagged it with Lancia badges to reach buyers seeking more civility than a regular compact hatchback. It sits on the Project 188 platform that underpinned the second-generation Fiat Punto, ensuring proven mechanicals, and inherited the Idea’s structure yet gained softer lines and richer trim. A total of roughly 237,500 units rolled off the line across eight model years.
Design & Premium Touches
Against the trend of slab-sided small MPVs, the Musa adds chromework and a higher beltline that flows into subtle rear lamps, shrinking the visual mass. Inside, Lancia replaced Fiat plastics with two-tone upholstery, real metal details on the dash, and optional leather seats, aiming at couples shifting from large sedans without surrendering ride quietness.
Performance & Practicality
Front-wheel drive and a front-mounted engine kept the Musa car-like to drive. Its 3 985 mm length left genuine space for five and a flat-fold rear bench that expanded the already deep cargo area beneath the high roofline. After production ended in 2012, Lancia’s small-MPV shoppers were steered to the subsequently launched Fiat 500L.
