When Fiat took control of Lancia in 1969, the first fruit of the takeover was the Lancia Beta, an entry-level luxury car that carried the Italian marque from 1972 until 1984 and bridged the gap between the Fulvia and the later Prisma.
History and Importance
Launched in 1972, the Lancia Beta marked the dawn of Fiat-era Lancia design and engineering. As the brand’s first all-new model after the 1969 buy-out, it replaced the Fulvia in Lancia’s line-up and paved the way for future sedans like the Prisma.
Design Brief
Positioned as an entry-level luxury vehicle, the Beta aimed to retain Lancia’s premium reputation while incorporating Fiat’s economies of scale. Clean, understated styling and a spacious cabin balanced sportiness with everyday usability, reflecting period Italian automotive tastes.
Model Span
Over its twelve-year production life the Beta evolved through saloon, coupé, spider, and shooting-brake variants, adapted to meet changing regulations and customer expectations. Production concluded in 1984, closing the chapter on one of Lancia’s most ambitious post-Fulvia projects.
