Built in 1907, the Lancia Alfa-12HP holds the distinction of being the very first automobile to wear the Lancia badge. Its modest 12-horsepower engine and lightweight construction set the tone for an Italian marque that would become synonymous with innovation and rally success.
Birth of a Brand
Alfa-12HP emerged from the newly formed Lancia company in 1907. Designed under the guidance of Vincenzo Lancia and his partner Claudio Fogolin, the car rolled out of the Turin works as Lancia's opening statement in a nascent auto industry. With only a handful produced that first year, each chassis was crafted largely by hand.
Compact Proportions & Engineering
At just 3.8 m long and 1.6 m wide, the Alfa-12HP rode on a 710 kg frame — impressively light for its era. Power came from a side-valve inline-four producing around 12 PS, routed through a four-speed manual gearbox and chain drive, yielding a genuine 90 km/h top speed that was brisk for 1907 roads.
Legacy & Succession
Though production numbers were small and surviving examples rare, the Alfa-12HP laid the engineering and aesthetic groundwork for Lancia’s next step: the Beta-15/20HP series. Within three years the Alfa was phased out, yet its basic design ethos — compact size, driver-focused balance, and refined finish — became recurring themes in every Lancia that followed.
