Fiat Regata

Between 1983 and 1990, Fiat repurposed the mechanical bits of its Ritmo hatchback into a compact four-door sedan and wagon called the Regata, bridging the practical gap left when the 131 Mirafiori line bowed out.
History and Positioning
Fiat launched the Regata in 1983 as an urgently needed successor to the rear-drive Fiat 131. By lifting the sedan and wagon sheetmetal directly from the refreshed Ritmo platform, the firm could offer families a front-wheel-drive saloon with modern packaging at minimal development cost. Production in Italy ended in 1990, yet the Regata lingered on Fiat’s Argentine line until 1995 and was quietly replaced there by the Tempra.
Design and Variants
Though mechanically identical to the Ritmo hatchback, the Regata added a formal three-box roofline and larger rear overhang, stretching the body to 4 280 mm in length. A practical Weekend estate arrived in 1984, featuring an extended roof and folding rear seats that boosted luggage room. All sheetmetal ahead of the A-pillar remained unchanged from the donor car, keeping production lines simple and spares interchangeable.
Engine Range
European buyers could choose between three petrol engines or two naturally aspirated diesels, all mounted transversely and driving the front wheels. Fiat’s South American operations later swapped in revised engines taken from the Tempra, allowing the Regata to remain compliant with local emissions and tax rules through 1995.
