Slotting in right after the Fiat 132, the Argenta carried Fiat’s large-family flag from 1981 to 1985, marking the final chapter of mass-market rear-wheel-drive Fiats for more than three decades.
Background
In 1981 Fiat introduced the Argenta as a thorough face-lift of the outgoing Fiat 132 rather than a clean-sheet design. Dropping the three-digit badge was part of a broader rebranding push that replaced numeric monikers with more evocative names. By continuing the same boxy three-volume silhouette, Fiat aimed to keep development costs low while signalling a modernized identity to buyers.
Design & Dimensions
Styling stayed conservative: a conventional four-door sedan with squared-off edges and chromebright detailing common at the time. Overall dimensions sat at 4 430 mm long, 1 630 mm wide and 1 430 mm tall, giving it a spacious cabin that anchored it firmly in the European executive-saloon class.
Legacy
When production ended in 1985, the Argenta handed the large-family mantle to the upcoming Fiat Croma. Thirty-one years elapsed before Fiat launched another mass-market rear-wheel-drive passenger car—the resurrected 124 Spider of 2016—making the Argenta the end of a lineage that had begun with the 1950s-era 1400.
