Fiat’s 6 HP, produced from 1900 to 1901, bridged the gap between the tiny 4 HP and the larger 8 HP while staking the automaker’s first claim in competition. Its arrival signaled both mechanical growth and Fiat’s emerging taste for racing.
Genesis
Built during Fiat’s third year of existence, the 6 HP marked an evolutionary step from the company’s first-ever 4 HP. While part counts remained modest, the new model gained a reverse gear and adopted rear-wheel drive, features that improved everyday practicality for early motorists.
Design & Engineering
The chassis measures 2 810 mm long, 1 450 mm wide and sits 1 620 mm tall on a 1000 kg package. Compared with riveted merchant-wagon standards of the day, the frame was light yet rigid, while the rear-wheel-drive layout was still a novelty for many European makers.
Motorsport
Fiat tuned a handful of 6 HP chassis into the 6 HP Corsa, its first dedicated racing car. Vincenzo Lancia and Felice Nazzaro campaigned the Corsa in hillclimbs and city-to-city sprints, giving the young marque international exposure before the firm had even turned five years old.
Legacy
Sold from 1900 to 1901, the 6 HP range stepped aside for the larger 8 HP, but its racing twin laid the foundation for Fiat’s sporting tradition that would later produce Grand Prix thoroughbreds and multiple championship-winning formula cars.
