Fiat 509

Produced by Fiat between the mid-1920s and early 1930s, the 509 was the marque’s successor to the 501 and a transitional step toward the more refined 508. Its compact dimensions and conventional four-seat family layout made it one of Italy’s first truly affordable mass-market saloons.
History
Introduced as the immediate follow-up to the Fiat 501, the 509 bridged the economics-driven austerity of post-war Europe with the growing motorization of Italian households. It remained on offer until the arrival of the Fiat 508 (Balilla) in 1932, after which production ceased.
Design
At 3 700 mm long and 1 420 mm wide, the 509 sat on a short wheelbase that minimized both material use and running costs. Conventional doors and seating for four in closed saloon form defined its practical, no-frills design brief.
Legacy
While never romanticized later like its 508 successor, the 509 quietly expanded Italy’s passenger-car fleet during a critical period of urbanization. Its straightforward mechanical package and modest footprint established a template for future Fiat small-family saloons.
