The Fiat 1600 Spider, a compact open-top sports car from Turin, bridged the purist 1950s roadster era and the mass-market 124 Sports of the late 1960s.
Background
Positioned mechanically and aesthetically between the Oscar-winning Fiat 1100 (Tipo 103) and the larger-engine Dino, the 1600 Spider carried little of its predecessor’s body yet preserved its 1050 kg footprint, making it a rare transitional model in Fiat’s post-war sports catalogue.
Design & Tailoring
Pininfarina sculpted a taut, 4032 mm long body only 1300 mm tall, giving the Spider a crisp silhouette that nevertheless folded four passengers under a short, folding top. Delicate bumpers and minimalist brightwork kept the kerb weight low while allowing twin carburetted breathing.
Specifications
As the name suggests, power came from a 1.6-litre inline-four whose lightweight 1050 kg bulk translated to brisk acceleration without the need for exotic materials. 1518 mm of track tucked inside the same wheelbase as the family saloon gave tidy handling within city streets.
After 1600 – the 124 Embrace
Fiat retired the short-wheelbase 1600 Spider in 1966, handing its open-air mission to the mechanically unrelated but spiritually aligned Fiat 124 Sports series, which doubled global sales figures and democratised affordable Italian wind-in-the-hair motoring.
