Autobianchi A112

Slotting beneath Fiat’s mainstream compacts, the Autobianchi A112 brought supermini packaging and a shrunken 128 platform to 1970s Italy. From its Milan plant it delivered 1.2 million units before bowing out in 1986 to the avant-garde Y10.
History
Unveiled in November 1969, the A112 replaced both the Bianchina and Primula and became Autobianchi’s sole model until its retirement. Production ran until 1986, by which time it had ceded the stage to the more modern Y10 it had helped create.
Design & Engineering
Mechanically, the A112 rode on a miniaturised version of the Fiat 128 platform, with the same architecture later adapted for the Fiat 127. Its compact footprint of 3.23 m by 1.48 m and curb weight of 670 kg delivered the agile feel typical of an Italian city car of its era.
Legacy
Nearly 1.25 million A112s rolled out of the Milan facility almost unscathed through two life-cycle facelifts. In surviving form it now enjoys niche classic status, remembered as the plucky stopgap that bridged Autobianchi’s rear-engine past to its forward-looking Y10 future.
