Built between 1983 and 1987, the Alfa Romeo Arna was the offspring of a short-lived 50:50 joint venture called Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli S.p.A. The hatchback—often cited as a mismatch of Italian style and Japanese engineering—was meant to succeed the Alfasud and was later replaced by the Alfa Romeo 33.

On 9 October 1980, Alfa Romeo and Nissan pooled their resources to create Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli S.p.A., with the explicit mission of blending Alfa character with Japanese reliability. After just seven years of operation—long enough for one model cycle—the venture was dissolved. The Arna itself was discontinued after the 1987 model year, leaving Alfa Romeo to regroup with the 33.
Design & Dimensions
The five-door hatchback measured 4000 mm in overall length, sat 1621 mm wide and just 1340 mm tall, achieving a modest 850 kg curb weight—slightly lighter than most contemporary rivals. The compact proportions hid a transverse front-engine layout shared with key Nissan components of the era.
Legacy & Reception
Marketed as the replacement for the acclaimed Alfasud, the Arna struggled to match its predecessor’s handling verve or Nissan’s perceived quality. Slow sales and lukewarm press criticism hastened its exit in 1987. Today, surviving examples are curiosities rather than collectibles, remembered chiefly for the unique story of Franco-Japanese collaboration that never quite delivered.
