Produced from 1968 to 1977 by Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo, the 1750 Berlina was the decisive successor to the 1900 and the predecessor of the Alfetta, bridging the gap between compact sportiness and executive comfort.
History
Alfa Romeo unveiled the 1750 Berlina in 1968 as an up-to-date saloon aimed at executives who still wanted the marque’s traditional twin-cam spirit. Production continued until 1971, at which point the 1.8-litre version was phased out in favour of the larger-engined 2000 Berlina, which carried on until 1977.
Design & Dimensions
Closely related to the contemporary GTV coupé but wrapped in a sober four-door body, the 1750 Berlina measured 4390 mm long, 1565 mm wide and 1430 mm tall. At 1110 kg it was lighter than many six-cylinder rivals, allowing the lively chassis to shine despite subdued styling.
Performance
Power came from Alfa’s well-proven twin-cam inline-four, initially displacing 1779 cc for the 1750 and later enlarged to 1962 cc for the 2000. Both engines sent power to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, delivering brisk acceleration for the era while retaining the free-revving character Alfa drivers expected.
Legacy
Although often overshadowed by the prettier GTV and the later Alfetta, the 1750 Berlina served a crucial role: it allowed Alfa Romeo to compete in the European executive-car segment without abandoning its four-cylinder heritage. Many surviving examples are now sought-after as practical classics that still reward spirited driving.
