The Delage Type 15 S 8 is a vintage racing car introduced in 1926 whose very name tells its engineering story: 15 for the 1.5-litre (1498 cm³) class, S for surbaissée (low-slung), and 8 for the straight-eight under its hood. Nearly a century later it remains one of the most evocative pre-war Grand Prix entries.
Formula Libre Genesis
Delage unveiled the Type 15 S 8 in 1926 to compete in unrestricted Grand Prix and Formula Libre events, where power-to-weight and reliability trumped fixed regulations. The long, narrow chassis and underslung rear axle allowed the car to sit remarkably low for its era, improving aerodynamics and stability on Europe's high-speed road courses such as Miramas and Monza.
Straight-Eight Innovation
Its beating heart was a 1498 cm³ straight-eight designed by Albert Lory, featuring dual overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers—cutting-edge technology that let the petite 1.5-litre unit rev freely and punch well above its displacement category. Output approached 120 bhp at 6,000 rpm, exceptional numbers that made the Type 15 S 8 competitive against larger-engined rivals.
Racing Career & Legacy
Although victories were sporadic against better-funded works teams, the Type 15 S 8 earned respect for its innovative powertrain and handling balance. Surviving examples have become blue-chip centrepieces in historic racing and concours events, demonstrating the French marque’s early commitment to lightweight, high-revving precision in the Golden Age of motorsport.
