History
The Volkswagen Golf Mk2 succeeded the Volkswagen Golf Mk1 and was produced from 1983 to 1992, becoming Volkswagen's highest volume seller during its production run. It was eventually replaced by the Volkswagen Golf Mk3.
Design
The Golf Mk2's exterior design retained the general lines of its predecessor but was made slightly more rounded under the direction of VW's design director Schäfer. Compared to the Mk1, the Mk2 was larger, with a slightly increased wheelbase and exterior dimensions.
Specifications and Production
The Golf Mk2's dimensions were length 3980mm, width 1665mm, and height 1415mm, with a mass of 845kg. It was heavier than its predecessor by about 120 kg (260 lb). Over 6.3 million units of the Golf Mk2 were produced during its production run.
