History
The Volkswagen Type 181 was originally developed for the West German Army to replace the 1956 Auto Union DKW Munga. It was later introduced to the civilian market under different names such as Kurierwagen in West Germany, Trekker in the UK, Thing in the US and Canada, Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy.
Design and Specifications
The Volkswagen 181 has a length of 3780mm, width of 1640mm, and height of 1620mm, with a mass of 995kg. Its design as a two-wheel drive, four-door convertible made it suitable for various uses.
Legacy
The Volkswagen 181 was eventually succeeded by the Volkswagen Iltis. Civilian sales of the 181 ceased after the 1980 model year, although production continued until 1983.
