Introduced in 1970, the Opel Manta is a rear-wheel drive coupé produced by German manufacturer Opel until 1988. Based on the Ascona family car, it competed with the Ford Capri in the sporting coupé market.
History
The Opel Manta was built in two generations from 1970 to 1988. It was succeeded by the Opel Calibra and preceded by the Opel GT.
Design and Variants
The Manta was available as a two-door coupé in its first generation, with a three-door hatchback variant added in the second generation. Its name is derived from the manta ray.
Performance and Legacy
The Opel Manta remained rear-wheel drive throughout its production run and achieved certain competition success. It was based on the Ascona family car and measured 4292mm in length.
