Opel's entry into the city car segment was marked by the Karl, a hatchback that replaced the Agila in 2015. Manufactured by GM Korea, it was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet Spark. The Karl was eventually discontinued in 2019 following Opel's sale to PSA Group.

The Karl was not sold under the Opel brand alone; General Motors also marketed a rebadged variant in the United Kingdom as the Vauxhall Viva, reviving a nameplate used from 1963 to 1979.
