Launched in March 2012, the Mercedes-Benz R231 is the sixth generation of the SL-Class roadster, notable for its extensive use of aluminium and significant weight reduction compared to its predecessor.
Design and Engineering
The R231 SL-Class was made almost entirely out of aluminium, resulting in a 140 kg weight reduction compared to the previous R230 model. It features a width of 1877mm.
Performance
The R231 SL-Class was initially released with Mercedes-Benz's new 4.7 litre twin turbo V8 engine, producing 435 PS. Notably, it was the first SL-Class generation not to offer a non-AMG V12 engined SL 600 model.
Generations and Variants
The R231 generation was succeeded by no direct successor within the provided data range, and an AMG version of the roadster was planned to follow the initial release.
