Introduced in July 1972, the Mazda Chantez is a two-door kei car that stood out for its longer wheelbase and powerful two-stroke engine. As a successor to the Mazda Carol, it represented Mazda's effort in the kei car segment during the early 1970s. Its unique specs and performance made it notable among its contemporaries.
Design and Engineering
The Mazda Chantez featured a longitudinally installed two-stroke 'AA' engine at the front, powering the rear wheels, a layout that was distinctive for its time. The spare tire was uniquely installed next to the engine on the right side, reflecting the space-efficient design typical of kei cars.
Performance
With its 35kW engine, the Chantez achieved a top speed of 115 km/h (71 mph) and could complete the 400 m sprint in 20.6 seconds, showcasing its performance capabilities for a kei car of its era. More recent tests of a 1972 model showed it could reach 0–100 km/h in 35.8 seconds.
Legacy
The Mazda Chantez was eventually succeeded by the Autozam Carol, marking the end of its production run. Despite its relatively short presence in the market, it remains a notable model in Mazda's history, particularly in the context of kei cars.
