History
The 626 debuted in 1970 as an evolution of the Mazda 616, starting life as the export version of the popular Capella. It grew alongside the Japanese home-market model, migrating from rear-wheel to front-wheel drive and later offering the company’s first V6. By the end of its run in 2002, nearly ten million had been produced across Asia, Europe and North America before giving way to the new Mazda6.
Design & Generations
Generation by generation the 626 expanded from tidy 1970s notchback to sleek 1990s sedan and liftback. Large glass areas and pillar-mounted C-pillar vents were early signatures, while later cars introduced smooth aero noses and flush-mounted bumpers ahead of the Mazda6’s bold Kodo style re-think.
Legacy
More than a sales workhorse, the 626 cemented Mazda’s reputation for durable, honest family cars outside Japan. Its affordability and parts commonality made it a staple in 1980s/1990s company fleets worldwide and kept second-hand values buoyant decades on.
