Ford CD3 platform

Jointly engineered by Ford and Mazda, the CD3 platform was the foundation for many mid-size sedans and crossovers that appeared throughout the 2000s and 2010s, effectively replacing Ford’s earlier CDW27 architecture.
Development
Ford and Mazda pooled resources in the early 2000s to replace the CDW27 platform. The resulting CD3 structure combined Ford’s global requirements with Mazda’s expertise in light, rigid unibody design, allowing both companies to trim weight while improving crash performance.
Applications
In the United States, the platform underpinned the first-generation Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln MKZ, while Mazda produced the first- and second-generation Mazda6 on the same architecture. It also served as the basis for early Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers, demonstrating scalable versatility.
Legacy
Though later cars switched to Ford’s newer global platforms, the CD3 design established the template for affordable, front/all-wheel-drive sedans and SUVs across Ford and Mazda showrooms for more than a decade, influencing dimension standards and powertrain packaging still referenced today.
