Born from Great Wall Motor’s rugged Truck family in 2023, the Tank 400 replaced the Tank 300 and Tank 500 as the third model to carry the Tank sub-brand, staking its claim in China’s booming mid-size SUV class.
History
Great Wall revealed the Tank 400 at the 2021 Chengdu Auto Show as part of its strategy to spin off Tank as a dedicated off-road marque. Sales started in China in 2023, positioning the 400 between the more compact Tank 300 and the larger, more premium Tank 500.
Design
Shorter than the Tank 500 yet still considered full-size, the Tank 400 adopts a squared-off, blocky silhouette with pronounced wheel arches and exposed rivet details, signaling its off-road intent while remaining practical for urban use.
Positioning
Great Wall markets the Tank 400 as the bridge between everyday comfort and hard-core capability, pricing it below the premium-luxury 500 yet above the entry-focused 300 to reach younger, adventure-oriented buyers.
