Italian marque Maserati entered the booming SUV market with the Levante, a mid-size luxury crossover built at Fiat’s Torino-Mirafiori plant from 2016 to 2024. As the firm’s first production SUV, it broadened Maserati’s portfolio while blending sports-car DNA with family-friendly packaging.
Genesis and production timeline
Development started under the working name Maserati Kubang concept shown in 2011, but the production Levante was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. European deliveries began in May 2016, followed by North American showrooms in September the same year. Assembly took place exclusively in Turin alongside other Fiat Chrysler premium lines, ceasing in early 2024 with a run-out Ultima 424 bhp special edition to mark the end of the model line.
Dimensions and design stance
At 5 003 mm long, 1 968 mm wide and 1 679 mm tall, the Levante sits longer and lower than most German rivals, yielding a long-hood coupe-like silhouette. Maserati retained its signature concave grille, triple-fender vents and frameless door glass, while a steeply raked D-pillar and active rear spoiler reduced form drag.
Market positioning and legacy
Offered from launch with either twin-turbo V6 or Ferrari-built V8 options, the Levante spearheaded Maserati’s push into global SUV segments where 60 % of luxury sales now occur. Although it never matched Porsche Cayenne volumes, the model doubled Maserati’s global deliveries between 2016 and 2018, proving that a century-old sports-car maker could pivot to high-riding family transport without diluting brand equity.
