The Maserati Barchetta is a rare mid-engine racing car engineered for track use, styled by Carlo Gaino of Synthesis Design and released in the early 1990s as a modern heir to the brand’s 350S and 450S racers. With no road-going version built, it distilled Maserati’s motorsport heritage into an uncompromising closed-wheel barchetta.
Design
Carlo Gaino’s pen brought the Barchetta a distinctly low-slung silhouette just 930 mm tall. At just 4 050 mm long and 1 965 mm wide, the carbon-fiber bodywork stretched wide over the mechanical package while dispensing with doors, windscreen and any concession to street legality—everything served aerodynamics and weight reduction.
Engineering & Performance
Mounted amidships was Maserati’s proven mid-engine architecture, visually linking the car to the 350S and 450S racers of the 1950s. While exact power figures aren’t catalogued, the racing-only construction mandated a stripped, tubular spaceframe and minimal curb weight to maximize on-track agility.
Legacy
Only a handful of Barchettas were produced for a single-make race series that lasted just one season. Its mechanical and conceptual DNA, however, carried forward into the De Tomaso Guarà—the first road-going sports car to inherit its proportions and intent.
