Built to conquer emerging-market showrooms as Fiat’s “world car,” the Linea sedan debuted on 26 March 2007 in Bursa, Turkey, filling the shoes of the Marea and bridging affordability with European style.
Design & Development
Styled by Fiat’s Centro Stile in Turin and engineered in partnership with Tofaş and Fiat do Brasil, the Linea rides on an elongated Grande Punto platform. At 4 562 mm long, 1 730 mm wide and 1 500 mm tall, it offers midsize cabin space while staying inside the tax-friendly compact-car envelope in many markets. Interior materials and trim levels were tailored with emerging-market durability in mind—hard-wearing plastics and higher ground clearance were standard.
Production Timeline
Pilot lines started rolling in 2006, with full series production kicking off at Tofaş’ Bursa plant on 26 March 2007. Output was aimed primarily at Turkey, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Turkish assembly continued until 2016, after which the Fiat Aegea stepped in as the next-generation compact sedan for the region.
Market Position & Successor
Marketed as a budget four-door that still felt European, the Linea effectively replaced the coupe/wagon Fiat Marea and was later succeeded itself by the Aegea/Tipo family in 2018. While never landing in Western Europe in volume, it became a familiar taxi and fleet workhorse across North-African and South-American capitals.
