Fiat 6640A

Built for the post-war Italian military, the Fiat 6640A served as a versatile 4×4 amphibious armoured vehicle from the 1950s through the 1980s. Its unique wheeled hull design balanced on-water mobility with land agility, filling a niche rarely attempted by Fiat’s commercial car programs.
History
Developed in the early 1950s for the Italian Ministry of Defence, the 6640A was a dedicated military project rather than a commercial Fiat product. Small production batches rolled off proprietary factory lines for over three decades, supplying Italian armed forces and selected allies during the Cold-War era.
Design & Engineering
Suspension and drivetrain were laid out for robust two-terrain operation: four driven wheels plus twin rear propellers allowed seamless switch from asphalt to water. At 2500 mm wide and 2715 mm high, the hull offered usable internal volume while still fitting on standard rail and road transports.
Operational Role
Primarily used for reconnaissance, liaison and light tactical transport, the 6640A could cross rivers without bridge support and carry a small crew plus equipment. Its longevity across four decades reflects gradual upgrades that kept the design relevant in successive Italian military reorganizations.
