Fiat 60 HP

Between 1904 and 1906, Fiat built the 60 HP, a big-bore tourer that doubled as the firm’s first internationally competitive racing machine. Its brief production window bridged the 24-32 HP and the later 35-45 HP, but it left tracks—most literally—in Europe’s earliest endurance events.
Development
The 60 HP evolved directly from the Fiat 24-32 HP, keeping the same architecture while enlarging the engine to achieve a genuine 60 metric horsepower. Only two short model years were needed before Fiat moved the technology—including lessons learned on track—into the 35-45 HP that followed.
Performance & Racing
Despite a hefty 1 740 kg curb weight and generous luxury coachwork, the big four-cylinder gave enough grunt for top speeds near 120 km/h. Examples contested the 1903 Paris–Madrid race, the formidable Circuit des Ardennes, and various early hill climbs, turning the 60 HP into Fiat’s first factory-backed racing tool.
Design & Dimensions
Stretching 4.75 m in length and standing 2.55 m tall, the 60 HP cut a towering profile typical of Edwardian tourers, yet its 1.55 m track width kept handling predictable over the day’s rough roads. Gauges, leather upholstery and polished brass completed the high-end specification expected of a prestige Fiat.
