Marking Fiat’s entry into Latin America’s emerging hatchback segment, the three-door 147 arrived in Minas Gerais, Brazil, for the 1977 model year. Built for a full decade in Brazil and lingering until 1996 in Argentina, it bridged the gap between the Fiat 127 and the later Fiat Uno while pioneering large-scale ethanol use in passenger cars.
History and Production
Fiat do Brasil launched the 147 in autumn 1976 at the Betim plant, tailoring the European 127 to local tastes and regulations. Global output exceeded one million units, with parallel assembly by Sevel in Argentina, and knock-down kits sent to Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Brazilian manufacture ceased in 1987 when it was superseded by the Fiat Uno, yet Argentinian plants carried on until 1996.
Ethanol Innovation
In 1979 the 147 received Brazil’s first factory-built, ethanol-only 1.3 L engine—an adaptation of Fiat’s 124-series block using higher-compression pistons, special valves, and alcohol-compatible fuel lines. The change slashed Brazil’s petrol import bill during the Pro-Álcool programme, making the 147 the world’s first mass-market car to run purely on renewable fuel.
Design and Variants
Rooted in Giorgetto Giugiaro’s 1971 127 silhouette, the 147 gained thicker bumpers and a raised ride height for Brazil’s rougher roads. A five-door development appeared only in Argentina as the Fiat 147 Spazio, while estate and pick-up versions like the sporty 147 Fiorino filled local commercial niches.
