Between 1950 and 1958, Fiat replaced the pre-war Fiat 1500 with a thoroughly modern design that became Europe’s first unit-construction production car. The Fiat 1400 pioneered this engineering milestone while sitting just below the slightly larger-engined 1900 that arrived two years later.
Development & Positioning
Launched at the 1950 Geneva Motor Show, the Fiat 1400 was conceived as a mid-range family saloon that would modernise Fiat’s line-up after wartime austerity. Occupying the slot vacated by the Fiat 1500, it offered more interior space and a stiffer platform without the bulk or price of a full-size luxury vehicle. From 1952, Fiat complemented it with the upmarket 1900, sharing the same body and wheelbase but equipping the flagship version with a larger 1.9-litre engine, chrome jewellery, and optional extras such as a column-mounted shifter and hydraulically-operated windows.
Engineering & Dimensions
The car’s most significant technical advance was its monocoque construction—eliminating the separate chassis made the 1400 lighter yet stronger than ladder-frame contemporaries. Power came from a 1.4-litre OHV four intended for respectable touring in post-war Italy. The exterior measured just 4.3 m long and 1.66 m wide, making it compact by American standards yet roomy enough for four adults. A 2.8 m wheelbase delivered a compliant ride on par with small luxury saloons of the era.
Variants & Production Life
Production of the 1.4-litre 1400 ran from 1950 to 1958, while the upscale 1900 carried on until 1959. Both were offered as four-door saloons; estate and taxi versions added commercial utility. By 1958, the model range was superseded by the all-new Fiat 1300/1500, marking the end of the first-generation unibody Fiats and laying a template for compact family cars across Europe.
