Fiat 133

Introduced in 1972 by SEAT in Barcelona, the 133 was created when Spanish engineers grafted a modern front end and fully refreshed cabin onto the structural underpinnings of the Fiat 600. It arrived just as Spain’s economy liberalised; the added side doors and enlarged engine fit the moment perfectly, giving growing urban families a compact front-wheel-drive city runabout that met tougher crash regulations while remaining attractively priced. Production ceased in 1979 when Fiat itself launched the Panda, rendering the 133 obsolete on both sides of the Pyrenees.

The angular, flat-bonnet styling instantly set the 133 apart from its rounded predecessor; a squarer nose accommodated integrated headlamps and a plastic grille, while the cabin gained five proper doors instead of the 600’s side-hinged rear panels. Inside, fresh plastics, wider bench seats and larger glass areas improved visibility and accommodation for four adults.

Though built in Barcelona for just seven model years, the 133 quietly gave Iberian markets the first taste of rationalized small-car design that would define the Panda, leading eventually to the larger and more sophisticated Fiat Uno. Cheap used examples became first cars for generations of Spanish and Portuguese drivers, cementing the model as a footnote worth remembering in southern Europe’s automotive folklore.
