Unveiled in 1987 as a mid-life reinvention of the beloved 126, the Fiat 126 BIS brought water-cooling and a full-width hatch to the cheapest Fiat on sale while retaining the same shoebox footprint. It was the last rear-engined city car from Turin before the 1991 Cinquecento flipped the script to front-drive.
Water-Cooled Revolution
Instead of the old air-cooled 594 cc twin, Fiat slotted in a 704 cc inline-four cooled by a front-mounted radiator, boosting power to 26 PS and trimming noise. Engineers kept the transaxle and swing-axle rear suspension largely unchanged, so maintenance remained simple—ideal for first-time drivers across Europe, Poland and beyond.
Design Tweaks
Outside, ribbed tail-lamps, plastic bumpers and a colour-keyed front panel masked the mechanical upgrades. Inside, new seat fabrics and door cards gave the micro cabin a modest lift. Overall length stayed at just 3.1 m—43 cm shorter than an original Mini—yet the upright hatch opened wide enough for a weekly shop.
Market & Legacy
Built in Italy until 1991 and under licence in Poland until 1993, the 126 BIS bridged the gap between the classic rear-engine Fiat 126 and the modern front-drive Cinquecento. Over half a million units kept affordable motoring alive for commuters and fleet buyers, and today tidy BIS models are emerging cult classics at specialist meets.
