Unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and reaching showrooms for 2013, the Dodge Dart restored a storied nameplate to Dodge’s lineup while effectively replacing the unloved Caliber. Built on an enlarged Alfa Romeo Giulietta platform, it became Fiat Chrysler’s first truly global C-segment sedan.
Origins and market debut
Production started in 2012 at Chrysler’s Belvidere, Illinois plant, with U.S. sales kicking off in June that year as a 2013 model. The Dart launched alongside a sister car, the Fiat Viaggio, for Chinese and other non-American markets, underscoring the model’s role as the first tangible fruit of the Fiat–Chrysler partnership.
Design and engineering
A 4.67 m long four-door sedan riding on a stretched and widened Alfa Romeo compact chassis, the Dart pairs front-wheel drive with MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension. At 1456 kg, its proportions (1829 mm wide, 1466 mm tall) positioned it between subcompact and mid-size rivals while preserving a lower, sportier roofline than the Caliber it replaced.
Market presence
Though marketed as a Dodge in North America, global distribution has seen the same car wear Fiat Viaggio badging in China and select overseas markets, filling Fiat’s sedan gap in segments where the Dart name has no heritage. No direct successor has been announced, and Dodge continues to list the Dart in its 2025 U.S. lineup.
