Chrysler VH Valiant

From June 1971 to March 1973, Chrysler Australia built the VH Valiant—marking the moment the Valiant line became a home-grown Australian design after earlier US influence. This generation replaced the VG series and set a fresh visual and engineering direction for Australia’s full-size family sedan.
History
Chrysler Australia opened its Tonsley Park plant in Adelaide to manufacture the VH Valiant, using the then-new ‘H’ platform engineered specifically for local road conditions. Production ran for just 21 months, making clean-sheet models like the Ranger sedan and Pacer coupe aimed squarely at Holden and Ford rivals.
Design
With overall width of 1 885 mm and a low 1 420 mm roofline, the VH introduced crisp, squared-off sheet-metal and a longer wheelbase than its VG predecessor. A new full-width egg-crate grille, twin headlamps, and pronounced hip-line gave the family sedan a muscular stance unique to the Australian market.
Legacy
As the first uniquely Australian-designed Valiant, the VH established styling and packaging themes that carried through to the VK and CL series. It also cemented the Valiant’s reputation for rugged six- and eight-cylinder engines at a time when domestic content rules required 95 % local manufacture.
