Built by Fiat yet badged as an Alfa Romeo, the P2 became the first World Champion grand-prix car when it secured the maiden Automobile World Championship in 1925. Victories at Spa and Monza that season cemented its place at the summit of 1920s motorsport.
Birth of a World Champion
The P2’s 1925 campaign began tragically when Antonio Ascari lost his life while leading the French Grand Prix at Montlhéry. His teammate Gastone Brilli-Peri kept the title quest alive, winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and clinching the inaugural world crown for Alfa Romeo.
Design for Dominance
Even with sparse mechanical detail in period records, the car’s twin victories across starkly different circuits—Spa’s high-speed sweeps and Monza’s mix of oval and road course—underline an adaptable chassis and potent supercharged engine well ahead of its mid-decade contemporaries.
Immediate Legacy
By winning two of four championship rounds in its sole title season, the P2 set Alfa Romeo on a decades-long trajectory as a force in international racing and provided the template for later Grand Prix designs from Milan.
