Launched in 1910, the A.L.F.A 24 HP was the very first car built by the freshly created Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili—two years before the firm rebranded to Alfa Romeo.
History
Introduced the same year ALFA was founded, the 24 HP rolled out of the new Portello factory near Milan from 1910 until 1914. Its existence spans the brief but formative period before World War I forced automobile production to halt, and it lays the direct groundwork for the later Alfa Romeo 20/30 HP.
Design & Dimensions
The large touring car rides on a 4.25 m long chassis—1.55 m wide and 1.7 m tall—giving it the proportions of an early Edwardian luxury automobile. Powering the 24 HP is a 4.1-litre inline-four whose name simply matches the Italian fiscal horsepower scale then in use.
Legacy
Less than four years of production and modest total output still make the 24 HP a punctuation mark in automotive history: it is both the first passenger car ever to wear the ALFA badge and the last before that badge gained the Romeo suffix. The model thus links the company’s Darracq-influenced origins to the performance marque that would dominate European motorsport just a decade later.
