MG Q-type

English version

Launched by the British Motor Corporation in 1934, the MG Q-type was a rare 750 cc single-seater racing machine whose sole purpose was to rewrite the small-capacity lap record books. Only eight were built, making it one of the scarcest pre-war MGs and a fascinating footnote in the brand’s racing history.

Origins and Purpose

Developed in Abingdon during 1934, the Q-type was conceived as an ultra-light competition car to exploit the 750 cc class limits. It drew its minimalist chassis from the earlier MG K3, shortened even further to just 3.63 m long and 1.35 m wide. The tiny dimensions, live rear axle, and lack of running boards kept weight below 450 kg, giving the Q-type a decisive power-to-weight advantage over larger rivals.

Design and Engineering

Power came from a supercharged 746 cc overhead-cam inline-four—an evolution of MG’s well-proven XPAG lineage—rated about 113 bhp. Girling hydraulic drum brakes and half-elliptic leaf springs were advanced for their day, while the pointed "tail-out" body was clad in hand-beaten aluminium. A single aero screen and cycle-style wings further reduced drag, pushing the car beyond 190 km/h on banked circuits like Brooklands.

Competition Record and Legacy

Q-types stormed British races throughout 1934–35, setting class lap records at Brooklands and Donington. After the war, survivors found second lives in vintage events and hill-climbs, cementing the model’s cult status among collectors. It was directly followed by the stillborn MG R-type, making the Q-type the ultimate expression of pre-war MG single-seater engineering.
