MG F-type

Launched in late 1931, the MG F-type (marketed as the 12/70) was MG’s short-lived answer to demand for a smoother six-cylinder sports car between big saloons and the popular Midgets.
History
MG introduced the F-type in October 1931 as a stop-gap range extension while engineering resources were swept up with the later MG Magnette and K-type programs. Only two model years rolled off the Abingdon line before MG shifted focus to the L-type, making this one of the marque’s briefest production runs.
Design & Engineering
The car mounted a 1271 cc MG six (in-line, side-valve) set in a slightly stretched Midget chassis, giving the F-type an unusually refined drivetrain for its class. With a four-speed manual driving through a conventional rear axle, it could maintain a genuine 110 km/h—impressive for a 1.3-litre car in the early Thirties.
Legacy
Though few survive today, the F-type bridged MG’s four-cylinder Midgets and the larger, more sophisticated L-type; collectors prize original 12/70 models for their rare straight-six soundtrack and pre-war MG detailing.
